There's a kid-friendly email client that allows you to lock down the specific email addresses that the kid can receive emails from or send emails to. Instead of "Management" or "Control Panel," there is a "Parent" area. My only complaint so far is that the software was originally designed for a home market, and it shows. One of my favorite features for keeping their notoriously short attention spans engaged is a randomly selected screen that can be set to pop up at start, that provides them with a randomized selection of websites, games, and activities from those installed on the machine. There's a preview of each web page, as well, which I have seen them using to pick out something they'd like to examine. The browser seems to be much easier for them to navigate, as it's essentially a cutesy, big-buttoned version of any other web browser. The kids are really enjoying the software and seem to like the installed games. Compared to the "black box" mentality of the AWE software people, it's quite refreshing. There's an obvious lack of licensed content, as that will really increase the price if it's included "out of the box," as it were, but the company has set up the software so it's quick and simple to add in links and software from the main desktop. I really like the fact that it simply overlays the original Windows desktop - starts and closes in moments, and fixing a broken website was as simple as updating Internet Explorer and starting up Magic Desktop again. The software itself is very easy to set up and maintain. Their customer support is very fast, polite, and personal. The software itself passed virus inspections with flying colors. I went ahead and risked the purchase of Magic Desktop (put my reputation on the line a bit with my boss, as he was understandably a bit suspicious as well) and so far have been nothing but pleased.

Also, since these folks aren't on Spiceworks, I'll toss in a link to their website: Magic Desktop Site Opens a new window. I'll leave the original post below this for archival purposes.
